Feng Shui Tips for Bedrooms and Bed Placement

Feng Shui, an age-old Chinese tradition, aims to establish equilibrium and tranquility within a

room by organizing its layout and design. It emphasizes creating pathways that enable the

smooth circulation of energy. This ancient practice revolves around harmonizing the five natural

elements - water, wood, fire, earth, and metal.

Applying Feng Shui principles to a bedroom, a place meant for relaxation and renewal, can help

foster a positive and harmonious environment.

Here are some important advice on how we can achieve this in the bedroom:

Position of Bed in the room

Optimal bed placement is essential for a good night's sleep as it is thought to impact the energy flow or chi within the room. To achieve restful sleep, position the bed in a commanding location where you have a clear view of the door while lying down. Avoid placing the bed in line with thedoor or under a window, as these are deemed unfavorable positions. It is recommended toposition the bed against a solid wall, preferably not a shared or entrance wall, and avoid placing it in the center of the room.

It is recommended not to position the bed against the right or left side of the wall, and avoid

placing the foot of the bed directly against the wall. Doing so may block the flow of energy on

one side. It is beneficial to have space on both sides of the bed to enable energy to circulate

harmoniously around you. If achieving this is challenging, try to create some space, even if it's

just a few inches, on the wall side.

For optimal feng shui, ensure that the headboard of your bed is against a solid wall, ideally

facing south. When your head points south, it aligns with the earth’s electromagnetic field.

Research shows that it can improve sleep quality. On the contrary, north is considered a

negative sleeping position in feng shui, often referred to as the ‘death position’, potentially

leading to sleep disturbances and feelings of lethargy. By aligning your bed correctly according

to feng shui principles, you can improve the flow of energy, enhance security, and promote

relaxation for a tranquil sleep environment, ultimately resulting in better rest and rejuvenation.

Considering design aspects, incorporating a bed with a footboard or positioning a chest or

bench at the foot of your bed can enhance the feeling of security. This setup acts as a protective

barrier between your bed and the door, while also adding functionality and making a stylish

statement in your bedroom.

Placing the bed directly facing the bathroom door or above/below a bathroom is viewed unfavorably in feng shui. This arrangement is thought to bring in negative energy, potentially disturbing sleep and impacting general well-being. To improve the energy flow, it is recommended to keep the bedroom and bathroom doors closed and position the bed away from

directly aligning with the bathroom.

To promote better sleep quality, refrain from positioning the bed directly under overhead beams

or sloped ceilings that could generate oppressive energy, potentially leading to discomfort or

restlessness during sleep. Avoid having sharp corners or angles pointing towards the bed, as

they are thought to generate negative energy and may result in feelings of unease or discomfort

while sleeping.

Accessories and Equipment in the Bedroom

To enhance sleep quality, it is advisable to refrain from placing the bed directly in front of

electronic devices like televisions, computers, or exercise equipment. These devices emit

electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that can disturb sleep patterns and disrupt the body's natural

energy flow. If electronics are necessary in the bedroom, consider keeping them powered off or

unplugged during sleep and positioning the bed away from direct contact with these devices.

Keep bookshelves, chairs and mirrors out in line with your bed. It may block positive energy

flowing into your bed space. The space under the bed and at the sides of the bed should be

clutter free.

To promote restful sleep, invest in a comfortable mattress and high-quality bedding. Opt for

natural materials over synthetic fabrics or harsh chemicals that could interfere with your sleep

and cause discomfort.

Aim for a balanced bedroom layout by using curtains or blinds and arranging furniture and decor

symmetrically. This will create a harmonious atmosphere, enhance the flow of positive energy,

control light levels, and maintain adequate ventilation for a healthy sleeping environment.

Feng Shui in a small bedroom

Even in a smaller bedroom, the bed should be in a commanding position and from where you

can see the door while lying down. This can make you feel in control and can aid better sleep.

The first thing one should do is tidy up the space and keep it organized. Opt for a storage bed

but ensure that underneath it is organized and clutter free. A solid headboard will provide good

support. Avoid oversized headboards or a bed. Place nightstands or bedside tables on either

side of the bed to create symmetry and balance the energy in the room.

Try to ensure there is fresh air. Air purifying plants like spider plant, peace lily, money plant,

bamboo palm or aglaonema can be kept in the room but do not overcrowd the bedroom.

If there is not enough natural sunlight in the room, then you can strategically use mirrors to

reflect the light. When placed correctly, they can make a room look larger. Avoid positioning

them where they reflect the bed.

Opt for lighter colours which can make the room look more spacious. Good lighting can create a

warm and balanced ambience. The emotions you like to foster should reflect the art choices.

Every item you choose should give you the feeling of joy or a sense of purpose.

Try not to over furnish a small bedroom, it can restrict the flow of energy.
